Quality is Top Priority

When Lindquist needed a new quality control review process for exempt-organization returns, Michelle was asked to lead the way. With specialized expertise in the regulations of the Department of Labor, the Internal Revenue Service and the Franchise Tax Board, she created a brand new department to serve tax-exempt entities such as labor unions, employee benefit plans and charitable organizations.

“For the most part, I’m not assigned to clients like the other partners, and that’s for a good reason,” says Michelle. “I am an objective set of eyes looking for consistency, quality control and technical issues so the other partners can focus on audits and meet deadlines. I help them resolve their questions by doing further research. And, I spend a lot of time digging into new regulations so I can stay informed and report on the ever-changing laws.”

Michelle recognizes repeat questions as issues, then develops best practices and communicates them internally. This provides consistency and an efficient way to educate everyone, enabling them to deliver the same quality and level of expertise across the board. She also heads up the firm's tax training.

Keeping Up with Reporting Requirements

Michelle shares her expertise with others in her field and teaches when opportunities come her way.

“Most people find it very difficult to understand new reporting requirements,” says Michelle. “To help, I have taught several courses for attorneys, administrators and industry groups.”

How does Michelle stay on top of things while regulations constantly change?

“I read several subscriptions and watch the headlines on a daily basis,” she explains. “When I
see something relevant, I inform our auditors and our management team. If it affects our clients and is newsworthy, I write about it in our newsletter.”

QuickBooks Expertise

Lindquist’s small- to medium-size clients often use QuickBooks because it is reasonably priced and a very powerful off-the-shelf product. Michelle is the one clients call when they need help getting set up and completing non-routine transactions.

I am an objective set of eyes looking for consistency, quality control and technical issues.  I spend a lot of time digging into new regulations so I can stay informed and report on the ever-changing laws.

Michelle enjoys public speaking, going to networking events, shopping and travel.
