Enjoys Working with Unions and Related Trust Funds
Joe Thiermann thoroughly enjoys working with unions and their related trust funds. While he serves as engagement partner on approximately 30 plans (including those with over $15 billion in assets), conducts system-wide reviews, and designs and implements accounting systems, he knows that what he’s really doing is helping a lot of hard-working people such as teamsters, sheet metal workers, painters, electricians and engineers.
“The trustees, union officials, administrators and fellow professionals are down-to-earth people and we care about a common purpose—doing what’s right for the organizations and the participants we serve. They’re hard-working people and I feel good about helping to ensure that money is spent properly,” says Joe. “I grew up in a blue-collar community and my dad was in a union, so I understand how important pension and health benefits are to members and their families.”
Natural Public Speaker
With his natural gift for public speaking, Joe enjoys participating at conferences and workshops. He’s as comfortable speaking in technical terms to industry professionals as he is speaking in layman’s terms to those who aren’t in the accounting field. He’s spoken at the Annual Conference of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans (IFEBP), the IFEBP Accountants’ Institute and the Oregon Labor Law Conference, and he’s taught business courses to contractors.
More than 25 Years of Specialized Experience
Joe has more than 25 years of specialized experience with audits of defined contribution plans, defined benefit plans, health and welfare plans, labor organizations and not-for-profits. His services include audit, accounting, tax and consulting. He’s worked on special projects involving system design, expense reporting and compliance, and he often works in conjunction with other professionals to resolve regulatory and general management issues for clients.
As the partner responsible for the firm’s claims testing department, Joe supervises Lindquist’s team of claims testing professionals, designs department policies and procedures, and continually evaluates claims testing processes.

Always a team player in the office or on the field, Joe enjoys playing, coaching or watching sports of almost any kind. He has coached his sons’ little league baseball, basketball and flag football teams over the years. Joe played football, basketball and baseball in high school and for several years after. Now, an avid golfer, Joe spends time on the fairway with his wife and children.
