A Passion for Social Justice

With a double major in finance and accounting, Debbie Dimery could have followed the pack to Wall Street. Instead, she aimed much higher by remaining in California and working with organizations that affect the everyday lives of ordinary people who need her expertise the most.

“Wall Street didn’t serve my passion for solving social justice issues,” says Debbie. “Working at Lindquist allows me to do my best work, live my passion and use my professional interests to solve problems in a way that makes a difference. It’s a dream match for me.”

A Troubleshooter with an Eagle Eye

Debbie, a natural problem solver, loves tackling special challenges, creating long-term solutions and training clients so they can move forward independently. She often discovers bookkeeping and compliance issues and helps clients put better systems in place. She’s helped clients transition to self-administration, hire the right accounting people and implement internal controls so they could do everything right from the start. A troubleshooter with an eagle eye, Debbie has more than 25 years of experience and a passion for making things right.

“My most interesting projects have intellectual dilemmas—things I need to think deeply about and
then clean up,” says Debbie. “When we’re finished, clients are happy because I’ve taught them to be independent, which makes their lives a whole lot easier. Ultimately, it saves them valuable time, money and headaches.”

Equality for Women

Debbie has been with Lindquist since she graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1986. A company culture that fosters professional growth and mentorship, continuing education for both employees and clients, and equality for women has given Debbie the tools and support every CPA needs to advance in their career.

“It seems other firms need strategic initiatives for women because they have a fundamental cultural problem and a lack of flexibility in the workplace,” said Debbie. “We’ve never needed such a thing here. We have 11 partners and about half are women. Even with a husband and two children, I’ve never found it to be an issue.”

Experience

Debbie provides traditional audit and accounting services for charitable organizations, trade and professional societies, colleges, single-employer and multiemployer benefit plans, and a variety of other tax-exempt organizations.  Debbie’s not-for-profit clients range in size from $200,000 to $67 million in total assets.  Debbie meets Yellow Book education requirements, and she has unique expertise with OMB Circular A-133 requirements. Debbie works with labor organizations representing up to 3,000 members with $13 million in assets. She serves as engagement partner for multiemployer and single-employer employee benefit plans with assets ranging from less than $1 million to $12 billion.

On Her Own Time

Debbie applies her passion for social justice during her personal time by mentoring youth through the UPHigh program of the Marcus Foster Education Fund.  UPHigh (Uniting Potential with Experience for Higher Learning) offers the chance for a mentor to support and guide economically disadvantaged students through four years of college.

Debbie has also served as vice president on the board of “Challenge Day,” a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to help every child feel safe, loved and celebrated in school, no matter who they are. In a structured one-day event, it teaches kids to communicate with other kids in a safe environment about things that are troubling them, like bullying, feeling like an outsider, and so on.

“So many kids feel isolated for one reason or another,” says Debbie. “They are either tortured at school or there’s something going on at home and they believe they are the only ones going through this. By the end of day, they see how everyone has challenges and how they’re affected. They aren’t alone. So, with lots of tears and lots of hugging, it’s a powerful healing experience for everyone.”
