Helping You Stay in Compliance

Not-for-profits are highly regulated, and the government requires extensive financial and statistical reporting from organizations that receive federal money. New regulations seem to be added every year, and the government continues to scrutinize indirect and direct costs charged to governmental grants. Being out of compliance with regulations puts your organization in jeopardy of having your federal money cut off; in a worst-case scenario, the government could ask for the money back.

We help our not-for-profit clients stay informed about regulatory changes, and we help them remain in compliance by reviewing and making recommendations for improving and streamlining their internal procedures for preparing, reviewing and filing the required reports.

Our team has the experience and knowledge to help you stay out of trouble. We work closely with you to help ensure you have the systems in place to monitor and troubleshoot issues as they arise, not after the auditors discover them.

Experience with Similar Engagements

The vast majority of our practice is devoted to services for tax-exempt organizations. Our firm is committed to the not-for-profit sector, and we fully understand the day-to-day issues that affect exempt organizations and their management. We understand reporting requirements and the necessity of properly designed and maintained accounting systems and records. We keep abreast of sensitive Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issues, and keep our clients and associates informed of important developments through seminars and publications.

Audit Apprach

Our compliance approach is to proactively inform you of any changes affecting your organization, such as changes in the OMB Compliance Supplement, so that you may review your internal procedures, policies and processes in a timely manner and remedy potential compliance issues. Because the OMB has revised the cost principles in recent years, we will work closely with you to provide guidance regarding the requirements for administering federal grant awards. In accordance with the compliance requirements, we will rotate grants selected for testing on an annual basis, as needed, based on certain factors and guidelines provided by the OMB, which will include new grants received during the year.

We Work Closely with Everyone

We also will work closely with your Board of Directors, executive director, accounting department, legal counsel and other service providers to assist in addressing compliance with laws and regulations and ensuring that your assets are safeguarded. As the independent auditor, Lindquist LLP will evaluate your compliance with laws, regulations and organizational directives.

Our evaluation will include a review of:

  • Governmental filings, such as the Data Collection Form
  • Minutes and other documents
  • Allowability of expenses under OMB Super Circular requirements
